[Maybe Jack should've been paying more attention to the talk of contamination and possible infections when the murmurs had first started, but it'd all seemed so surreal at the time; he hadn't thought anything of it until Tooth.
And if Tooth could fall prey to whatever was going on, anybody could.]
Hey, it's me! Time for an unofficial Guardian survey. Are things good where you are?
[Lee had been getting too complacent during his stay here. There was enough food and water, the people were pleasant enough for the most part, and nothing was trying to kill anyone.
Until the other day. Now, Lee's worst fears were coming true. People were turning into living zombies and Clem was no where to be found. He'd searched everywhere and tried calling her on the cell phone many times. He'd panicked and raged at himself repeatedly, but now he was too drained physically to continue as he had been. Collapsing on the ground next to the well, he pulls out the walkie talkie he'd been holding onto and looks it over. It still has those stickers on it that Clem had been excited about.
Although Lee had no confidence this would work any better than the cell phone, he turns on the walkie talkie anyway. His voice easily betrays his worry and exhaustion.]
Clementine? Are you there? Please... if you can hear me, answer.
[ There's a loooong pause. It probably seems like his attempt was a failed one. In actuality, she just spent five or ten seconds staring indecisively at the walkie before hurrying over to pick it up in both hands.
He'll hear a bit of a crackle, and then a contrite: ]
Lee? [ Of course it's Lee, though. ] I'm here. [ And boy is she probably in trouble. ]
Ay - ay, Clementine, littlething. I dunno... I dunno if you're here. I dunno if you came back, but I'm here again. Alright? And I get if you ain't wanting to see me, but - just lemme know you're okay? Please?
Clementine? Clem, li-- littlething. [ He sounds like he's trying his best to stay even-toned. It works for the most part. ] Will you come on back home? Bring - bring Duck. We gotta stay indoors, okay? You gotta come back. Please.
[ There's a few seconds of silence as she tries to figure out what to do here. On the one hand, Ghoul's practically begging her to come back. On the other hand, she can handle Duck, but she doesn't know if she can handle however many people are upset in hers and Ghoul's house right now. ]
We were getting more food...
[ But partners don't split up, do they? So I guess that decides it. ]
[The text comes in about noon on the 27th, with quite a few names CC'd. TJ got around, but Amal has only just found the time to take care of a very important step in this process:]
hey
so TJ wrote a bunch of letter for friends in case something like this happened
if you're getting this, it means he wrote you one
you can come pick it up at the clinic in southtown, just ask bruce or courier for it
sorry this is so late
[However, unlike so many, Clementine has no need to visit the clinic. After leaving that morning from House 44, Amal returned later more than a little sheepish, and laden with parcels. Delivering everything in person would be hard on him in more ways than one, but he owed it to Ghoul to make it a little more personal. It only made sense to pay a visit to Ghoul's partner, too, her letter and knife, handle carved carefully into an alligator (or crocodile, who could say), in tow.]
Hey, uh... hey, Clementine. Listen, I won't stay long, I just... TJ left something for you. Thought I might as well come by, since I'm in the neighborhood and everything...
[Is this awkward? It's a little awkward. But he's sincere about it.]
[ Clem looks up from the comic she was peeking at - it's one of Duck's, he forgot it in her room - to Amal, now standing in the doorway. She didn't get the text (she hasn't checked her phone much lately), so it's lucky he dropped by or it would've taken a while for her to make it to the clinic.
She offers a little smile, not much but more than he or anyone else would've gotten a couple of days ago. But then he's talking about TJ and stuff that Teej left, and she sets the comic down and scoots to the edge of the bed, her smile fading to some kind of sad curiosity. ]
[ clem's eyes go wide when she gets the text, and for a second she's at loss for how to answer. but then she realizes that since this is just to nia, nobody's gonna lecture her if she talks about stuff she shouldn't.
soooooo... ]
it's when you do kissing stuff with a lot of different people. especially if it's at the same time and if it's really soon after you meet them
[ He's not stupid enough to go bolting across the house when the earthquake hits- but the moment that it's over and he's sure that he's steady on his feet? ]
Clementine! You alright?
[ Her first, always her first. He can check on everyone else after. ]
[ clem took refuge in a door frame when the earthquake hit, since that's what books have always said to do. about halfway through the quake, she started to second-guess that choice. earthquakes weren't supposed to last this long, were they?
but then it's over, and she hears lee calling from the kitchen. ] I'm okay! [ she calls back without missing a beat, pushing herself up off the floor. instead of heading for lee, she heads for the window instead and lets him come meet her. right now, she's more eager to see what the heck's going on. ]
[Wrapped in shining paper with iridescent ribbons, the package is both unassuming and suspiciously neat considering the wear and tear creeping in around the edges of Verdance Bluffs. Folded inside a small gold envelope is a type written note:]
ONLY IN THOSE SIMPLE, EVERY DAY THINGS WHEN WE LOOK WITH OUR EYES FILLED WITH HIS LOVE CAN WE FIND HIM.
[Inside, Clementine will find a dress: pink with frills, folded carefully with pressed seams. When unfolded however, something else entirely falls out of the dress: a sawed off shot gun, with a handwritten note sticking out of the barrel:]
IF YOU WISH TO CONTINUE WITH THE LIFE YOU LOVE THE PEOPLE YOU LOVE JOIN US
voice; backdated to March 22; PS: YOU'RE A DEAR FOR PUTTING UP WITH ME
And if Tooth could fall prey to whatever was going on, anybody could.]
Hey, it's me! Time for an unofficial Guardian survey. Are things good where you are?
OF COURSE I WILL ILU
[ Which sounds like a 'yes, things are just dandy' but is probably a big giant fridge horror moment for him. ]
